In some situations they can completely substitute a real-life communication and help such people not to feel lonely or socially isolated. Sometimes social networking sites help to find really precious and useful information. In different groups people from all over the world discuss various issues, share their personal experiences S; , Thanks to social networking sites, you will never lose information about your friends and other important people. S.: Social networking addiction too often becomes the cause of serious mental and nervous disorders, such as depression, social isolation, autism, and even suicide attempts of teenagers and young people. S.: For a great number of children and teenagers social networks today have almost completely substituted real life. Some of them spend so much time online that the distinction between life and virtual reality for them becomes blurred. Discuss SETI”s activities in pairs, giving reasons for your opinions. The SETI programme started in the 1960s. It uses high-tech equipment and hopes to establish contact with extraterrestrial life. Scientists involved in the programme listen to radio waves using huge radio telescopes. They truly believe that aliens may be intentionally sending out communication signals to us. Despite the enthusiasm of its participants, however, the programme faces many problems. For instance, there is little chance of them ever finding anything and so far nothing has been found. Perhaps alien civilizations lack the technology to communicate over long distances – they may just be wasting their time! If they were to communicate to us, we would not get their message for a long time – it takes great patience! If you would like to take part yourself you can join the SETI@home project. You can use your own computer to search for unknown and unusual signals from radio telescopes. Students discuss SETI’s activities in pairs, give reasons for their opinions. I think the SETI programme is a waste of time! Why do you think that? A Well, for a start, we have no proof that there is any alien life out there. B True. But if there was, shouldn’t we be trying to establish contact with them? A Yes, I understand why scientists keep sweeping the skies, but it’s such a huge task and they have little chance of finding anything. B I wouldn’t have enough patience! A Neither would I. I think the money would be better spent on something else. B So do I. VII.. Контроль усвоения знаний по теме. Приложение 2 Make up word combinations using these words: Extraterrestrial weightless Explore life Make contact with space SETI exploration Feel aliens Space programme Experience outer space VIII .Объяснение домашнего задания Writing Imagine you are a scientist working for the SETI programme. There are many important problems on our planet and one of them is our universe. It is explored by scientists over the world. And they are still continuing… It’ wonder but we are not alone on our planet. Thanks for the lesson. I hope you’ve got some information about space. Good bye.
